Puerto Rico Earthquake Relief
Multiple earthquakes in Puerto Rico wreaked havoc on the locals and their pets in January 2020, leaving thousands of people homeless and rescue groups struggling to house their animals. Because of our close relationship with ARYA Pets in San Juan and our history of saving animals together, we knew we had to help the dogs and cats affected by the devastation. Our supporters generously donated so that we could provide much needed supplies to the areas hit the hardest, Guayanilla to Yauco in the Southwestern part of the island. ARYA Pets then delivered food, crates, and medical supplies to over 20 rescue groups/individuals over several days. We are fortunate to be able to assist our partners in times of disaster and will always contribute as much as possible.
Puerto Rico Stray Pig Project
In 2018/2019, we rescued more than 40 pigs and flew roughly 30 to the US mainland to find homes. With an estimate of over 1000 pigs living on the streets, WUFAW fought the USDA to allow us to spay and neuter pigs to help with the the stray pig problem in San Juan. We spent a week in PR building shelters to house pigs we caught where they could be safe while waiting to be sterilized. Weeks before our spay/neuter event was scheduled the USDA decided that they were instead going to kill the pigs and would not allow us to help. We destroyed all the shelters we had built and released the 200 plus pigs we had captured and vaccinated so that the USDA could not use them as traps.
