WUFAW is on the frontlines of Los Angeles’s growing animal welfare crisis, focused on Skid Row and throughout Downtown LA. In partnership with local rescues and community leaders, we fight for the forgotten — organizing protests, demanding accountability from city officials, and delivering critical aid to animals living in underserved neighborhoods alongside our unhoused neighbors.

We break down the biggest barrier unhoused pet owners face: getting their animals to and from the vet. WUFAW provides transportation and covers the full cost of spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchips, along with other medical needs and emergencies — from broken bones and traumatic injuries to cancer and severe skin disease. We also respond to urgent rescue and neglect cases throughout Los Angeles County, including puppies born in encampments. We partner with Caravita, SPCAI, Best Friends, and CATC to get animals fixed, and with Project Street Vet, who we bring in quarterly to run wellness clinics in Skid Row for the medical cases we can’t handle ourselves. We’ve already helped close to 500 animals this year — making a difference, one animal at a time.

We’ve also built strong relationships at the city level. Mayor Karen Bass recently walked Skid Row with us to see the problems facing animals there firsthand, and we’re working closely with Gabrielle Amster, General Manager of LA Animal Services, on enforcement and long-term solutions.

Skid Row, a densely populated area in downtown Los Angeles, is home to over 10,000 unhoused individuals and their pets across 50 city blocks. Animals face devastaing conditions: rampant breeding, lack of basic care, neglect and malnutrition.
